The Kookaburra is found in most parts of Australia. It is well-known for its unique call. It has been known as the laughing jackass, but is actually a member of the kingfisher family that has chosen to hunt on land. The Kookaburra feeds on lizards, insects, small rodents and snakes. They kill snakes by either flinging them against protruding branches or throwing them from a great height.
Where I live a group of Kookaburras call most mornings stating territorial boundaries around 6am. I live near the ocean but am surrounded by trees and palms.
